Located near the famous White Nile River rapids in the village of Kyabirwa, Uganda, the new building is built as an annex to the existing Surgical Center. Due to remote location and the nature of the rural patients the Surgical Center serves, there is a need for overnight stay for few patients after their procedure. The new facility has an overnight ward, a state of the art medical laboratory, as well as staff support facilities. Open cafeteria is used to serve meals for staff twice a day.
Secondary protective roof of the building is designed to collect rainwater, facilitate ventilation air movement and resembles the famous rapids of nearby Nile river. Building is cladded with locally made clay tiles, steel is fabricated by local ironworkers, and local skilled and unskilled labor is used for the construction. The new building relies on the existing Surgical Center solar array for primary and backup electrical power.
